Drop Everything and Read!

Drop Everything and Read

The need has never been greater to build the reading competency of our students. To support this, Wauchope High School has implemented Drop Everything and Read (DEAR) as a daily activity to support and promote the skill of reading as a means to learn as well as a recreational activity.

We aim to support every student to use these valuable 15 minutes to practice the skill and get lost in the art of reading. After roll call, all staff and students spend 15 minutes reading quietly. A text of their choice is preferable. As some students are not avid readers this is sometimes a hurdle so we encourage those reluctant readers to come to the library and get some help in selecting an appropriate piece of reading material. Students may read magazines, novels, comics, and instructional materials – anything appropriate.

We encourage parents to support this initiative to maximise the educational outcomes for students by having conversations about what they are reading, helping them find and choose reading material, or reading with them if the opportunity arises – we want them to succeed! If you need help or want more information, contact the team in the library.

We are also seeking donations of material in good condition – in particular sporting, motor bike and car magazines, other suitable magazines, shorter novels and other suitable material. This material will become part of our “Power Up Street Libraries” which are popping up around the school – allowing students to grab material without loaning.
