Year 8, 9 and 10 students return to school on Thursday 30th January.

The Uniform Shop, situated in the school foyer, will be open on Saturday 18th January and Saturday 25th January from 9am to 12 noon.

The Uniform Shop will also be open from Tuesday 28th January to Friday 31st January from 8.30 qm to 9am. EFTPOS available.

Staying healthy into the new school year

Immunisation is a simple, safe and effective way to protect your family from harmful diseases this holiday season and into 2020. Visit your doctor for general health and vaccination advice.

Immunisation not only protects you and your family but also others in your community, by reducing the spread of preventable diseases.

Children starting school in 2020 must have up-to-date immunisations to enrol.

These vaccinations help protect children from highly infectious and severe diseases including whooping cough and measles.

Travel health

If you’re travelling overseas during the school holidays, you may need vaccinations or medication – both for general health protection and for region specific diseases.

If you’re travelling to the Northern Hemisphere, you may even need a flu shot.

NSW schools respond to bushfires

Many schools are responding to the catastrophic fire rating that is affecting communities across the state this week.

We are continuously updating the School safety page with a list of government and non-government schools, as well as TAFE NSW campuses that are currently non-operational.

While some schools are temporarily non-operational due to localised fires, many others in high-risk areas are non-operational as a precautionary measure.

Schools in some areas are being used as emergency evacuation centres at the direction of the Rural Fire Service.

For schools that are currently operational, school pickups and dropoffs will continue as usual. If your school is currently non-operational, it will likely remain so tomorrow.

Large scale distressing events affect our school communities in many ways. Headspace’s mental health support resource (PDF 100.52KB) is available to help students, teachers and school staff respond to the bushfires.

Who will be our school leaders in 2020?

On Monday 9th september, year 11 students delivered their captain speeches, every student and staff member had a chance to vote on who they thought should be the school leaders for 2020. Such a lovely group of students made voting very difficult. The 2020 leaders will be announced at the Year 12 Final Assembly on Thursday 26th september.

As part of the Destination Moon science week focus, Wauchope High School donated 3 rockets to the year 3,4,5 and 6 class. With Mr Reid at Huntingdon Public School the students spent an hour constructing their rockets and then the following week arrived at Wauchope High School ready to launch. The students learnt about the physics behind rocket propulsion including calculating flight velocities. The students loved finally launching their rockets but one rocket flew a little too far and ended up in the Hastings river, sorry fish. This program is being offered to our other partner primary schools in the area. Interested parents and community are invited to observe the activities the next time primary school students come to launch rockets!

Year 11 Biology field trip

As part of their mandatory pattern of study preliminary Biology students are required to undertake practical work. Wauchope High students undertook an ecological survey of the rock platforms at the Southern end of Shelley Beach. They were practicing surveying skills such as running a transect and using quadrats to evaluate population abundance and distribution of common invertebrates. The students were excellently behaved, learned a lot and had a great day. The highlights included finding a pair of large common octopus that were happy to play with the students.

Bugs on the menu

Ms Munro introduced her class to bugs as a sustainable food source. Insects such as crickets are a complete protein and contain a useful amount of protein, comparable with soybeans. They have dietary fibre and include mostly unsaturated fat, some minerals and vitamins. Some students were keener than others but none wanted the bugs included on the canteen menu.

Lower North Coast Dance Festival

The Wauchope Dance Company danced up a storm at the Lower North Coast Dance Festival. They performed on Tuesday night in two dances. Survivor, a dance about not letting people push you around and knowing when to walk away. The second dance Arachnophobia, portrayed the irrational fear of spiders starting off in silence with a chilling scream from Charlotte Cooper to wake up the audience. We were lucky enough to be selected to perform both dances in the Showcase Evening, which displayed the best dancers from the Festival. Our students did Wauchope High School proud with their amazing performance. They also participated in a dance workshop with Heath Keeting, where they were taught a commercial Jazz routine. Congratulations on a fantastic effort and a massive thank you to Mrs Jenny Grein for choreographing the dances and Miss Ashley Thomas for accompanying her to the Festival.

Year 12 Biology Depth Studies

Students in Year 12 Biology are currently completing their depth studies on disease. The depth studies were launched with an excursion to the UNSW Rural Clinical School in Port Macquarie, where university lecturers and medical students led the students through a model of a disease spreading through a population. At the end the students were ‘tested’ to see if they were infected, and from this they had to determine who patient zero was. A highlight was getting to see the medical school’s plastinated human specimens.

Students are now studying a disease of their choice, and conducting first hand investigations related to that disease.

Creative and Active Kids vouchers now available

Creative kids can now put a $100 voucher towards extra-curricular creative activities outside of school.

Together with Active Kids, this program aims to encourage more NSW children to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities such as coding, languages, circus, performing arts and visual arts.

Parents can apply for one $100 voucher for each child enrolled in school on the Creative Kids website and use it towards the cost of registration, participation or tuition. You just redeem the voucher with a registered provider in your area when making your payment.

This is a great opportunity for your child to become involved in a range of activities that will build on their education, growth and development.

The Game Changer Challenge is back

It’s not too late to become a Game Changer with applications for the Education Week challenge due by 7 June.

The Game Changer Challenge brings 16 teams from public schools across NSW – eight from primary and eight from secondary – to Sydney during Education Week in August for a three-day, intensive design-thinking workshop.

The Game Changer workshops, which start on Tuesday 6 August, includes teacher training in the use of design thinking as a teaching methodology and its application for school planning.

It also includes a team competition where schools will work under the guidance of experts from industry and academia to develop a solution to this year’s critical question: How might we humanise technology?

Department of Education Secretary Mark Scott has encouraged students and teachers to get behind the event as it highlights the critical thinking students will need to develop to succeed in the future.

“The Game Changer Challenge is an exciting initiative that helps educate and inform our students and teachers on how to integrate the problem-solving methodology of design thinking into the classroom,” Mr Scott says.

“It embraces the 21^st century skills our students will need to thrive in a globalised world such as collaboration, creative thinking and communication.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for our students at all levels to be involved in discussing and addressing a real-world issue that will affect their future lives. I encourage every school to get involved.”

The challenge is designed to make strong learning and teaching connections to the NSW syllabus specifically in the area of developing general capabilities such as critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, communication and problem-solving.

The challenge also provides teachers with an opportunity to gain exposure to the design thinking process and includes teacher resources to introduce this creative problem-solving methodology into the classroom.

Finalists will be selected based on a 60-second video that showcases your team’s vision around the question of humanising technology.

Parent and Student School Communication

Keeping your contact details up to date at the school office ensures smooth and seamless communication at all times. Our friendly staff are happy to help with all updates and communications to ensure accurate information is applied to student files.

Wauchope High School send a daily SMS Text message to parents/guardians advising them if their child was either absent from roll call or late to school. All SMS messages have reply options and SMS reply meets state requirements for recording absences, and no further action is required.

Once a week an email will be forwarded to parents where no response was received via SMS. If there has been no response to the email, a letter will be forwarded through Australia Post.

By law parents are required within 7 days to provide a valid reason for absence. If a valid reason is not provided within this time the school must record the absence as unjustified. We ask that you please reply to these notifications advising the type of leave.

If you receive information you believe to be incorrect please contact the school to discuss this matter. We are here to help, and by keeping the school informed of any issues we can respond in the best way to keep your child safe and well supported at all times

Your NAPLAN questions answered

The National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is a point in time assessment for students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. The tests assess the foundational skills in reading, writing, spelling and numeracy that are essential for every child to progress through school and life.

This year NAPLAN takes place between 14 and 16 May for paper tests and between 14 and 24 May for schools participating in NAPLAN Online.

NAPLAN data is used to help monitor student progress over time against a national measure and to identify areas of strength and improvement. It is used in combination with other school assessments to guide and support student learning.

Do you have a great idea to improve your area?

My Community Project is a new NSW Government funding program that is all about local ideas, local projects and local decisions.

You can apply now for grants from $20,000 - $200,000 for projects that will make a difference to your community. Projects could include new playground equipment, sports facilities, paths or ramps to improve access, public art or a community service.

The local community can vote for their favourite projects in July and successful projects will be announced in September.

Bring back memories, not measles

With school holidays just around the corner, it’s time to visit your doctor to check that you and your family are fully protected against measles, before you travel overseas.

Measles is a serious, highly contagious, viral illness that is easily spread through the air when an infectious person coughs, sneezes or breathes. If you and your family are not fully vaccinated, or have never been vaccinated, you are at risk of contracting measles.

Not sure if you’re fully protected?

In Australia, the measles vaccine (MMR) consists of 2 doses. If you’re not sure whether you’ve had 2 doses of the measles vaccine, visit your doctor. It’s safe to receive another dose.

Children born in Australia

If your children were born in Australia, they may have received the measles vaccine at 12 months old and the second dose at 18 months, in accordance with the National Immunisation Program.
If you have a baby under 12 months old, consult your doctor about getting their measles vaccination.

Adults born in Australia

Born before 1966 – you were most likely exposed to measles as a child and are generally considered to be immune. If in doubt, ask your GP.
Born between 1966 and 1994 – you may not have received 2 doses. Talk to your doctor about the free vaccine if you’re unsure.
Born after 1994 – the National Immunisation Program offers 2 doses, and you can check your vaccination status using the Australian Immunisation Register.

Follow your heart, not the herd

2019 school budget allocations

Like all NSW public schools, this week we will receive a School Budget Allocation Report with our funding for 2019. The report will help us manage our total budget delivered through the Resource Allocation Model (RAM).

The RAM supports schools through needs-based funding to ensure a fair, efficient and transparent allocation of funds. Our school has the flexibility to make local decisions based on the specific needs of our students.

We will use our 2019 funding to support students and improve educational outcomes. The school executive will continue to work with the school community as we implement the school plan using this needs-based funding.

New uniform policy for NSW public schools

A new uniform policy has been introduced for NSW public schools, which for the first time include the option for girls to wear shorts and pants.

The Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, and the Minister for Education, Rob Stokes, announced the new "clear and concise" policy today at Condell Park Public School in Sydney.

Ms Berejiklian said the "modern makeover" would ensure that uniforms were practical and comfortable for students and affordable for parents.

The new policy says all students should have the opportunity to access the full range of school activities while wearing a school uniform, including physical activities, and girls must have the option to wear shorts and pants.

The Department of Education supports the wearing of school uniform to promote a sense of belonging for students and create a positive identity for the school community.

Public schools building great Australian lives

The Public Education Foundation has launched a new campaign promoting the importance of public schools to the community.

The online campaign helps raise awareness and instil confidence in parents and the community that our public schools provide a vibrant, inclusive and high quality education to all Australians.

The videos feature three famous Australians who credit their public education for equipping them with the skills and values that have enabled them to go on and make great contributions to society.

David Hetherington, executive director of the Public Education Foundation, said the campaign aims to highlight the impact of public schools to society.

"We believe that public schools are an essential pillar of Australian society. Tens of millions of Australians have benefited from public education as a springboard to happy and successful lives," Mr Hetherington said.

"We wanted to shine a light on this great national institution so we've asked a few famous Australians to share their stories."

Mark Scott, Secretary of the NSW Department of Education, said the campaign represents our commitment to supporting our students.

"We want every student in public education to be known, valued and cared for and the Public Education Foundation campaign highlights our commitment to providing opportunities for all our young people to succeed," he said.

Television personality Craig Reucassel, a writer, comedian, and host of ABC TV's War on Waste, spoke about the impact of attending a public school on his career and life.

"One particular teacher established this debating and public speaking class, and it really changed how I saw a lot of things," he said.

"I think they instilled in me a lot of the interest in social justice that I have now."

The videos also feature Professor Larissa Behrendt, the first Aboriginal Harvard Law graduate, who spoke about the teacher who had the most impact on her at school.

"My English teacher, Miss O'Sullivan, was somebody who really shaped my confidence," she said. "I was encouraged to have a voice and be passionate about what's right and wrong."

The Hon. Michael Kirby, former Justice of the High Court of Australia, recalls the encouragement he received at school to strive for excellence.

"We were a public school, encouraging people to do what they want to do and with excellence."

"Excellence was the motto of my school," Mr Kirby said.

The three students featured in the videos attend Wollongong High School of the Performing Arts, Sydney Secondary College Balmain Campus and Northmead Creative and Performing Arts High School.

The Public Education Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to providing life-changing scholarships to young people in public education and enhancing the value and reputation of public schools.

More new classrooms, preschool places and teachers in $17.3 billion education budget

Treasurer Dominic Perrottet, Education Minister Rob Stokes and Early Childhood Minister Sarah Mitchell outlined a range of new initiatives funded by the $17.3 billion education budget in 2018 to 2019.

The government will be investing $6 billion over the next four years to deliver more than 170 new and upgraded schools, including planning for more than 20 new projects.

"We are proud to be making this unprecedented investment into the future of our children," Mr Perrottet said.

"This year's NSW Budget takes our already record school building program to another level – a massive 170 schools new and upgraded schools over the next four years.

"That brings our total schools building program to 230 new and upgraded schools since 2011."

"The NSW Liberals and Nationals Government's strong financial management has allowed us to invest so heavily in our schools and education system."

Mr Stokes said communities right across NSW will benefit from this record investment into education.

"NSW is experiencing an increase in school enrolments and we have in place an unprecedented program of investment in new and upgraded schools to meet this demand," Mr Stokes said.

A staged investment of $500 million is being allocated to provide cooling for schools, while improving the indoor environmental quality, through the installation of smart and sustainable air conditioning systems powered by solar energy.

In another landmark initiative, NSW will become the first Australian state to provide universal access to community preschool for 3 year olds under a $197.8 million program.

"Because of this historic investment, average daily fees will decrease significantly and the savings will go directly back into the pockets of hard working families," Mrs Mitchell said.

This brings total spending on early childhood education to $474.3 million in 2018 to 2019.

Other education investment in the 2018 to 2019 NSW budget includes:

$160 million to be spent in 2018-19 to continue its blitz on planned school maintenance, part of a record $747 million investment over four years.
$71.8 million to implement the literacy and numeracy strategy in NSW schools.
$50 million in additional flexible funding will be provided to government schools to implement the school leadership strategy - freeing up principals and school leaders from administrative work.
$3 million for the first comprehensive review of the entire school curriculum since 1989.
$2.8 million to encourage the preservation and study of Aboriginal languages.
$30 million to continue to deliver greater access to green space and sports facilities in public school playgrounds through the 'share our space' program.
Funding for around 900 extra full-time equivalent teaching positions in NSW government schools.

The NSW Government will also invest $1.3 billion on non-government schools, an increase of 7.5% on 2017 to 2018. This includes a $32 million increase in the building grants assistance scheme over four years for capital works projects to support enrolment growth in non-government schools.

The record $17.3 billion investment in education allocates $15.7 billion for recurrent expenses and $1.6 billion for capital investment in 2018 to 2019.

Recently Maddie, and her brother Owen, received high distinctions in the Australian Geography Competition. Maddie has now been selected as one of only 16 students in the country to attend the'2016 Geography Big Week Out' on North Stradbroke Island on the last week of term. From this event, four students will be picked to represent Australia in Serbia at the 14th International Geography Olympiad.

Nathan to represent NSW

Rock climbing is not for the faint-hearted, this is a sport that is both physically and mentally demanding. Rock climbing requires endurance, skill and courage, these are qualities that Year 11 Wauchope High School student, Nathan Bartlett, has certainly proven he has. Nathan has been very busy travelling and competing this year in State Titles, recently Melbourne, Queensland, Tasmania and upcoming Titles taking this young man to New Zealand. Later in the year Nathan will represent NSW where he will be competing in the Australian National Boulder Championships. Nathan trains hard and works as a volunteer at local gym, Centre of Gravity Port Macquarie. We at Wauchope High School would like to wish Nathan all the very best as he continues to excel in Rock Climbing and following his dreams at such an elite level. Well done Nathan.

The Wauchope High School Year 12 Graduation Formal will be held on Thursday 12th November at the Wauchope RSL Club.

Tickets are $50 per head and are available from the school office or online at www.trybooking.com, searching for 'WHS Year 12 Formal'.

There are limited seats, tickets are selling fast, sales close on 30th October.

Photographs will be taken at the RSL from 5pm, the function starts at 5:30pm.

Parent Teacher Evening 20th October

At 6:30pm there will be an information session for Year 11 students who will be studying for their HSC in 2016.

Wauchope wins the Jack Parsons Memorial Shield

It was a hard fought battle but Wauchope came out the victors on day 3 of the 40th Anniversary Wauchope Cumberland Interschool Visit. The final score was Wauchope 25 Cumberland 19.

It was an awesome 3 days filled with fun, great sportsmanship, renewing of old friendships and wonderful contests full of passion and commitment.

Thank you to Mr Hancock and Mr Pearson from Cumberland High School for a magnificent job in co-ordinating this visit.

Brutus Gets A Makeover

Brutus, the Cumberland vs Wauchope Visit mascot, received a much needed makeover for the 40th Anniversary. A huge thank you to Mrs Stennett who restored Brutus to his former glory just in time for the competition. Brutus has been a feature of the visit since the early 70's but over the years has become a little worse for wear and in need of repair.

Australia's Biggest Morning Tea was held recently at Wauchope High School, in excess of $700 was raised for the Cancer Council. Members of the community, staff and students all enjoyed beautiful food, soft music and each other's company as they raised money for this great cause. Wauchope Cumberland 40th Anniversary Dinner

As part of the 40th Abnniversary celebrations a dinner is to be held at the Wauchope RSL Club on Thursday 25th June, commencing at 7pm. This is only the second commemorative dinner organised in the 40 year history of the Cumberland Visit.

On this occasion, to recognise the significance of the Visit to the communities of both schools, all former team members, parents and other people who have been involved in the Visit over the years, are invited to attend the dinner.

Tickets for the dinner are now on sale at a cost of $35 per person, individual tickets can be purchased or tables of eight can be booked.

WHS Dux Daniel's ATAR is 96.3

Congratulations to WHS Dux for 2014, Daniel McMillan who gained an ATAR of 96.3. Daniel came to Wauchope High as the only student in Year 6 from the small rural school of Comboyne on the plateau behind Wauchope. Shannon Pritchard followed with an ATAR of 90.5 and a solid number of students gained band six and/or five in their subjects. Band 6 results were recorded amongst the Year 12 cohort in the subjects of Chemistry, Physics, Extension English, PE/H/PD and Primary Industries. Most students were happy with their results and over 95% of applications for early entry into SCU, CSU and UNE were awarded recently.

Stage 4 Gifted and Talented class - 2015

In 2015 Wauchope High School will be forming a Stage 4 Gifted and Talented class. This class will be a combined group of students from Years 7 and 8 who will undertake a G&T program of learning with teachers trained in the delivery of G&T learning experiences. Entry into this class will be offered on the basis of student performance on a school based selection test.

The class will undertake their studies in a range of modes suited to G&T students including a compacted curriculum mode and acceleration. Students will also explore stimulating and challenging material beyond the syllabus, engage in self-directed project based learning as well as team based and individualised project work.

Over the next few years we hope to expand this structure so that our G&T students will have the opportunity to engage in learning appropriate to their ability and learning style right throughout their years of schooling at Wauchope High School.

If you wish your child to be considered for placement in the 2015 Stage 4 Gifted and Talented class you will need to complete the application form included below and arrange for your child to be present at Wauchope High School for the selection tests which will take place on Friday 14 November from 9 am – 11 am in the school hall.

HSC 2015 Information Night

Parents caregivers and students are invited to attend an information night concerning the 2015 Higher School Certificate.

When: Thursday 23rd October Time: 6-7pm Location: School Library

On this night students will receive a copy of the HSC Assessment Booklet for 2015. This booklet contains vital information regarding HSC courses, task submission, and requirements to satisfactorily complete the course.

Each year more Wauchope High students are joining us to respect members of their own families and other town members who gave their lives and did not return or who gave up part of their lives to fight in conflicts around the world over many years of Australia's history. This night is an opportunity to tour our school's facilities, view student work and meet the staff; including Heidi Speers who will be 2015 Year 7 Advisor.

Show you care about your child. Being part of the P&C gives you a voice in your child's education and an insight into how the school operates. In addition over the last three years, your P&C has proudly invested $123,000 into the school.

Your school desperately needs you; the parent, the caregiver or the community member to take part in it's P&C. The current members will not be returning, their children have all completed Year 12. A minimum of two hours each term will ensure the Uniform Shop and Canteen will continue to run.

The next P&C meeting will be held on Wednesday 19th February at 7pm.

The Annual General Meeting will be held on Wednesday 18th March.

Swimming Carnival Tuesday 4th February

The Wauchope High School Swimming Carnival will be held on Tuesday 4th February from 9:30am to 3:15pm, Roll call at school at 9 am.

Cost: $3 entry $2 Water Slide (optional)

BBQ: Year 12 is running a BBQ, $2 for sausage sandwiches

Canteen: The canteen is running all day

Spectators: Parents are welcome to watch their children, the pool charges $1.10 for spectators

Participation: This is a whole schol event, there is no alternate program at school. Students are encouraged to participate an competitive events, if they are capable. However this is purely voluntary.

The water slide will run as a separate activity during the day to give all students a chance to cool off.

A novelty swim- through is also part of the program, where students gain house points for completion of laps, in any fashion, including walking in the shallow end.

Any student who does not attend school on this day will be marked absent, and a note will be required.

House Colours: Gordon A-D - Blue, Kendall E-Le - Yellow, Lawson Li - Re - Red, Paterson Ri-Z - Green

Students are encouraged to support their house by wearing these colours, a hat is strongly recommended ans sunscreen will be provided.

Australia Day

The Wauchope community celebrated Australia Day on 26th January in Bain Park.

The celebrations started at 8:30am with guessing competitions, demonstrations, a vintage car display, face painting, tug of war and a jumping castle for the chidren.

The official ceremony included Australia day speeches as well as presentations. The Wauchope high School Captains were invited to take part and present a speech on how lucky we are to live in Australia.

Our four captains attended and represented the school well. Thomas Last and Jacqueline Thomas presented their speeches to the community not just on how lucky we are to live in Australia, but how lucky we are to live in Wauchope.

On the conclusion of the speeches it was noted that the Wauchope community was in good hands as it moves into the future.

Congratulations to all of the captains, Thomas Last, Jacqueline Thomas, Hollie Lewis and Trae Cole.

Congrats Sarah 98.5 ATAR

Top Wauchope High School student Sarah Houseman has achieved an ATAR of 98.50 with strong results by Rebecca Hicks ( ATAR of 93.45) and Jackson Thompson and Nigel Malcolm coming close behind. With Sarah's highest marks of 95 in Chemistry, Mathematics and Agriculture, it has set her up to follow the career path she wishes to undertake in Veterinary Science. Rebecca, who also gained a number of band 6 results, achieved a mark of 97 in Senior Science which she undertook by distance education from Camden Haven High School. Rebecca has already been offered an early entrance into her career path of choice of Communications at Charles Sturt University.

Naomi Williams and Natalie Schmitzer also achieved strong results.

On top of these exciting results, Wauchope High received a large number of early entrances to university; eighteen to the University of New England, ten to Southern Cross University and thirteen to Charles Sturt (depending on their results). This is an excellent outcome for those students.

Congratulations to all the students for their results, especially students choosing a non ATAR pathway in vocational education. They will now follow their career training with a number of TAFE units or part of their apprenticeship or traineeship already completed.

We also congratulate our 4 support unit students who received a Life Skills HSC, Joshua Howard, Patrick O'Sullivan, Bon Pelepczuk and Troy Smailes.

Industrial Action - 2 hr Stop Work Meeting

The NSW Teachers Federation has called upon its members to participate in a 2 hour stoppage on Tuesday 3rd December 2013.

Please be advised:

Most Wauchope teaching staff will take part in this action and the school will be non-operational until 11am.
Year 11 Camp will go ahead as planned
Recess will be at 11am with a short assembly and roll call at 11:20am
Students will resume normal classes after the assembly
at this point school buses will run as normal.

Willis was nominated for the 2013 NSW Premier's ANZAC Scholars Memorial Tour, he is 1 of just 16 in the state to be awarded this prize.

He left for Vietnam and Singapore on 29^th June for 2 weeks to tour the battle sites and pay homage to our servicemen and women.

This is a wonderful opportunity for Willis,we are proud of his achievements.

The University of Newcastle is offering five-day residential experiences for Year 9 students who are entering Year 10 in 2013.

They include Girls Choices Summer School and LIVE IT! (for boys).

The Girls Choices residential experience (2 – 6 Dec 2012) aims to expose girls to the range of study and career options for HSC graduates in maths and science subjects.

LIVE IT! (9 – 13 Dec) is designed to inspire boys to build on their potential to succeed in senior school.
Participants will experience life on campus - just like a real uni student. Along with meeting equity criteria, students should be willing to be challenged by new experiences and explore opportunities.

Wauchope High School students have a strong tradition of wearing school uniform. Following a review by a joint school and P&C uniform committee in 2011, the school community has decided to move towards adopting a new junior uniform, with a view to introducing it at the commencement of 2012. We stress that 2012 will be a transition year with students wearing both old and new uniform. We expect that by 2013, all students will be dressed in the new school uniform.

Changes in the school uniform are predominantly coming into the junior school. That is, the junior uniform will change entirely, with only minor changes to the senior uniform. The new junior uniform will now consist of a designed navy polo shirt and navy blue shorts, incorporating the school crest. The senior boys' uniform will also include navy shorts in place of the grey. The sports uniform remains unchanged.

Oustanding HSC ATAR of 99.90

Congratulations Anna Rienstra, our Outstanding Achiever of 2011 who gained an ATAR of 99.90(upgraded by BOS from 99.75 due to a Biology mark change to 98%).

With marks of 99% in Ancient History, 98% in Legal Studies, maximum marks for Extension 2 English. Anna is included in the HSC Merit List and HSC All Rounders who are students with 10 or more units in band 6. Anna has accepted an offer by the University of NSW to undertake an Arts/Law degree.

Trent Clayworth, Wauchope High School's Caltex All Rounder and 2011 School Captain, has been accepted by the University of NSW to undertake a Degree in Medicine / Surgery.

Congratulations to all the 2011 cohort who were able to gain places in the many varied courses offered to them and ggod luck in 2012.

A chat with author Adrienne Ferreira

On the 2nd December 2011, the Wauchope High School class of 8 English 1 travelled by bus to Camden Haven High School to meet the Australian author Adrienne Ferreira. Adrienne has so far only published one book that kick started her career.

Her first book 'Watercolours' is about a young boy named Novi who unravels his town's pressing mysteries through his paintings and drawings. She first found inspiration for 'Watercolours' whilst she was overseas in Sicily, Italy.

Adrienne talked about her writing, her experiences with writing, a bit about her life and what she does. Although Adrienne is not a full time writer, writing does make up quite a major part of her life. Adrienne also mentioned her 'Top 10 Writing Tips', some of these were:

Be Clear and Not Clever
Be Observant
Encourage Yourself
Take Constructive Criticism

After the chat with Adrienne, the Wauchope High students were very impressed. One of the students, Eliza, quoted; "Adrienne gave us many tips on writing, like being clear not clever, writing about what we know and backing yourself."

Overall, she was very nice and we were impressed with the humble vibe that emanated.

Adrienne Ferreira is a very impressive writer, and hopefully has many ideas to follow.

Writing a book is hard work, but if you have the determination and the love of writing, then you can accomplish it. this is what the students took away from this once in a lifetime experience and some were even inspired to write their own.

Our school is conducting a raffle to raise funds for one of our Year 12 students who was seriously injured in a car accident in September. Hastings Council and Youth Service Providers in the Hastings Area will be hosting a Youth Community Forum at Wauchope High School on Monday 29th August.
The Youth Network Providers who will be in attendance on the day are:
Community Health, Links to Learning, Mental Health, Mission Australia Youth Connections, Midcoast Connections, Social Worker Centrelink, Lifeline Midcoast, Wauchope Neighbourhood Centre, Wauchope Youth Sub Committee, After School Homework Help, Wauchope Community College, Suicide Prevention Network, Christo Youth Services, Success Dynamics Group.
It is proposed that these groups will speak to the SRC as well as approximately 20 students from each year group with information about services available in the Hastings and to gather information relating to the needs of the students in the Wauchope area for Youth Services.
The day will culminate in a dance performance and information fair with a free sausage sizzle during period 6 on Monday afternoon, all students are invited to this part of the day.

2012 applications for Southern Cross University's Rising Stars Scholarships opened in July and can now be completed online. Southern Cross University's Principal's recommendation scheme (STAR scheme)

Southern Cross University provides year 12 students from our feeder region with an opportunity for entry to the university based on Principal's recommendation, not your OP or rank. The Principal's assessment is not based upon academic performance alone, making it a good option for OP/ATAR ineligible students to be considered for a university place. Your school will recommend you based on your suitability to study your nominated course. If successful, You will receive notification of your offer before your Year 12 results are known, and you will receive your early offer to the university in December through the UAC or QTAC early offer round. Offers through the STAR scheme can be deferred.

Get a Head-Start

Southern Cross University is developing a new program that will enable Year 11 and 12 students to undertake a unit of university study at SCU while completing their senior studies. The program aims to provide local students with the opportunity to gain a taste of life at university, to stimulate their interest in academic pursuits and to enhance their educational performance and long term aspirations. The university subjects will be offered at the Lismore, Gold Coast and Coffs Harbour campuses. Participating students will not be required to pay course fees for this unit of study. Wauchope takes on Cumberland once again in the "Jack Parsons Memorial Shield"

Wauchope High School and Sydney based Cumberland High School enter into a unique clash of sports and debating over 2 and a half days in June.

In 2011 North Coast Area Health Service will again be offering a vaccination program at our school. The schedule for this year is as follows:

Year 7 – all students

Hepatitis B – 2 doses

Chickenpox vaccine – 1 dose

Boostrix – (Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough ) – 1 dose

Year 7 – girls only

HPV vaccine (to prevent cervical cancer) - 3 doses

Year 10 – all students

Boostrix – (Diphtheria, tetanus and whooping cough ) – 1 dose

A Parent Information Kit will be provided for each vaccine offered. This kit contains information about the vaccine and the disease that it protects against as well as a consent form.

A record of vaccination will be kept by the Area Health Service and a copy will be provided to the vaccinated student for their records.

Please understand that if you do not have your child immunised in the year that it is offered, then you can access this vaccine at a later stage at your GPs. The cost of the vaccine however will not be covered by this program.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the school principal.

Derrick receives The Order of Australia Certificate of Commendation

Derrick pictured with Governor Professor Marie Bashir and Mr Bob Henry

Derrick is Vice-Captain of his School and the elected Vice President of the Student Representative Council, and a Peer Support Leader. Derrick was responsible for an extensive review of the anti-bullying policy of his School. As an active Christian he has been a regular leader at Camp Ichthus at Scotts Head which was organized for the benefit of primary school children. He was selected for the lead character in the televised feature length film Dungoona which dealt with the problems of drugs, violence and sex in the high school system. Derrick is a blood bank donor. He was White Cliffs Young Citizen of the Year.

Wauchope High School has again excelled in HSC results. Both students and staff are delighted with the number of students who achieved bands five and six in individual subjects. In most subjects a band six equates to being in the top six to eight percent of NSW. Approximately thirty percent of our students received at least one band five or six, many receiving multiples of these higher bands. Our top two students gained four band sixes and a band five. This is an outstanding achievement.

Three of the Year 12 students, Joanne Beames, Kirra Anderson and Kirsty Gillan gained a university entrance score (ATAR) in the nineties with Joanne and Kirra gaining the outstanding ATARs of 95.95 and 92.75 respectively.

At present we know that seven of our Year 12 students also have remarkable ATARs in the eighties. They are Tiarna Magnus, Jaimie-Leigh Johnson, Siobhan Finnegan, Ashleigh Holmes, Gemma Imrie, Melissa Strawbridge and Sarah Symons.

A number of other students also received excellent individual marks in a subject. Jamie-Leigh Johnson received 97 in Music, Gemma Imrie 90 in General Mathematices and Tiarna Magnus 92 in Dance.

Jamie-Leigh's 97 in Music was a very pleasing result as she was one of our first ever students to study an HSC subject under our joint curriculum structure with Westport High School and Port Macquarie High School. Jamie-Leigh actually studied her Music through Port Macquarie High School.

Congratulations to all the students we have mentioned, and any who have not yet informed us of their ATARs. We wish you well. At this point twenty-three university positions have been offered.

We offered three pathways to the HSC students of 2009, an academic pathway, a general HSC pathway and a trade pathway which is a combination of school and TAFE certified courses. These results reflect the achievements of the students who choose the academic pathway. We also congratulate our students for their successes in all pathways.

Smart Science and Engineering

With a High Distinction, Wauchope High student Anna Rienstra was positioned in the top 1% of the 2009 NSW University Science Competition. This competition included students from as far away as Malaysia and has about 8000 entrants. Following not far behind, Year 9 students Alec Malcolm (in the top 5%) and Year 9 Benjy Mackiewicz (in the top 4%) claimed Distinctions. Yr 10 Alana Denley (in the top 6% ) also gained a Distinction.

Credits were awarded to Year 7 student Daniel McMillan, ( top 14%), Year 8 student Tom Rienstra (top 18%) and Yr 9 Carey Fletcher (top 22%) Year 11 students from Wauchope High participated of which seven received citations. The proof is in! Competition Coordinator, Mr James Langley said at assembly "The Wauchope High student body is not just good looking, good at sport, but smart as well. We hope these results inspire more to try their hand next year. "

THE STRONGEST BRIDGE

Wauchope High's first attempt at the 2009 Aurecon Bridge Building Competition. Our team, composed of Benjy Mackiewicz, Alec Malcolm and Carey Fletcher, chose to develop an arched suspension bridge which required significant materials testing and fabrication to bend the balsa without snapping. Each school is allowed one team of three from Yr 8 or 9. The team is given a pack consisting of two sheets of 610 x 100 mm balsa, 12 x 6mm x 6mm x 910 mm balsa sticks, 3 m of string and a small tube of glue.

The bridge must span 550 mm and last years winner held 115 kg. 30% of the final score is for aesthetics, innovation and workmanship. The bridges had to be presented for testing in person at the NSW Art gallery in Sydney. Over 200 school competed in this exciting challenge.

Of Lambs, Calves and Alpacas

Alpacas, new lambs and cows calving are keeping Wauchope High Agricultural students busy as Spring approaches while the students develop skills that will allow them to access careers in animal based vocations, including Veterinary jobs, Agriculture and Primary Industries.

Within the last few weeks, some ewes with twins have neeed help feeding their lambs and students are taught to hand feed providing supplementary nourishment.

As a new resident of the Hastings, Alpaca Stud owner, Mrs Katherine O'Connell has donated two male alpacas to the Wauchope High Agricultural Centre. This type of community support from Wauchope residents and the landholders in the Hastings, provides strong links between the school and the rural community. The students benefit, with many students able to undertake work experience on local farms for their Primary Industries Work Placement.

Cows Create Careers is a community group competitive project that teaches students how to raise dairy calves. The research and presentation that supplement the hands on experience raising dairy cows (lent to the school by local dairy farmers) has been a successful. In fact Wauchope High School was the 2008 Champion School in this interschool competition.
